Roku and Chill

A total app overhaul from beginning to end

Project Details

Roku TV App

The Challenge

Due to a new SDK release from Roku, Charter was forced to make the business decision to sunset their old app and build a new one from scratch with full feature parity. The business challenge was to meet app certification deadlines while also retaining the majority of customers as the Spectrum TV app on Roku was a significant driver of video revenue and subscriber retention.

The customer challenge to solve was to seamlessly transition current customers to an entirely new video experience without disorientation due to the introduction of Charter’s brand new design system.

My Role

I was responsible for all the UX implementation for this initiative including testing new design system components, styles, pages, and features. I collaborated early with the UI designer on this project to ensure a smooth rollout with our development partners.

Business KPI & Metrics

Outside of meeting the deadline of app certification on the new SDK, the primary business objective was to transition hundreds of thousands of customers onto the new app with ease which was monitored through platform performance and retention metrics.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite

Kite is Charter’s design system that was developed in order to create consistent experiences across its many products. Like many design systems, the goal was to expedite some of the design phases and create more efficient deliverables for our development partners. And although the creation of the design system was a huge step, it had yet to be fully implemented on any of our video products.

Through this project, I was able to test many of the original assumptions built into the design system since this project would require a complete implementation of the design system for the first time.
